Airfryers!
In comparison to all our other appliances, the airfryer we bought seemed to create the most buzz among our guests. What is this - an air fryer? What functions does it have? How does it work? We found ourselves happily sharing details on our decision-making process more than a couple of times.
We had a hard time choosing the right airfryer for ourselves. We found that there are a bunch of different brands out there, each with their own version of an airfryer at differing price ranges. We had to decide what worked best for us, an airfryer in the $250+ range or a simple one at $50?
After careful consideration (we’ll share our thought process below), we decided that an airfryer would tie in with our healthier diet intentions (limiting oil in our diet) and that it will be used quite frequently. As such, we decided to invest in a functional airfryer that would last. Below are some of the air fryers that made our shortlist:
1. Mayer 5.5L Air fryer
This particular make and model is very close to our hearts, as both our parents had this one. It is the most straightforward to use, with one knob each for timer and temperature. Cleaning was a breeze as the interior was non-stick too. Its price was definitely very friendly to our pockets.

2. Mayer Digital Glass Air fryer
This is from the same brand as above, Mayer. The difference is that the controls are digital and it’s a see-through glass basket. This means that you can look through and see the cook of your food without having to open and close in between cooks.
Other than that, it’s honestly pretty satisfying to see your food cooking in the airfryer! So we kinda put this in our criteria when searching for an airfryer.

3. La Gourmet Crystalline Air Fryer
Likewise, this one had a glass basket so we could look through and see our food get cooked. But OMG there’s green and pink. The colours were really pretty and it’s pretty rare to see kitchen gadgets in colour.
I’d consider this as a gift for our pink and green lover friends!
4. Ninja Air Fryer Max
I’ve had this in my wishlist since I first saw this, I think, 2 years back. This thing came with a lot of functions and they are all pretty straightforward.
My initial pet peeve from all airfryers is that from personal experience, they do not give the same crunch and brown batter as cooking with oil, regardless of timer and temperature setting. At times, I ended up using a pan and oil to achieve the desired crisp, defeating the purpose of an airfryer in the first place.
But the Ninja Air Fryer has a Max Crisp function, making it one of the machines that could possibly have a pretty decent crisp to my nuggets and fried foods!
You can also roast, reheat, and even dehydrate fruits to make chips! I’ve also seen videos of this machine and it’s from there that I realised you can actually bake with an airfryer!?
All in all, this product was a close second and we’d probably have gotten this if we didn’t chance upon the one we actually bought.
WHAT WE EVENTUALLY BOUGHT
Tjean Steam Air Oven
So that brings me to the product that we actually bought - the Tjean Steam Air Oven.
This machine looks like an Oven and can even function as one too. There’s quite a number of videos online and on TikTok with recipes on baking with this machine. So if you have a small house like us and are on the fence on getting an oven, maybe consider getting the Tjean Steam Air Oven!
There’s also a steam function so dishes like steamed fish or Dim Sum can be cooked with this machine.
The capacity of this is 10.5L! So yes, it’s enough to fit a whole fish to steam or add medium-sized corningware to make dishes like mac & cheese or even lasagne.
They provide a tray to collect any oil drips etc., an air frying basket and a wire rack to hold plates or corningware.
In light of eating healthy, one of our frequent purchases is the Soy Garlic Grilled Boneless Chicken Thigh from Farmpride. Before we got our air fryer, we used the microwave to prepare it. The cook wasn’t as crispy but it was cooked enough for us to eat. So when we got this steam air oven, the cook was so, so much better without using any oil at all! It was cooked all the way through and it was crispy, yay!

Because of all this, we felt that the price was justifiable and we wasted no more time in getting it. It’s one of the things we use almost everyday at our house and so far, we’re pretty satisfied with the results.
